On 22 September 2024 AydrA released Deserter, the third and last single before Leave to Nowhere. Eighteen days later the album would be out — this was the final spark.

Deserter is where the story starts. In the narrative arc of the record it opens the flight: desertion from the regime. The album takes its inspiration from the condition of Eritrean migrants, from a dictatorship that imposes open-ended military service and turns leaving into a crime. Anyone who runs automatically becomes a deserter, and risks persecution, prison or death. Departure is not a choice; it is the only thing left.

Everything that follows on the album flows from that first step: the desert in Black Skin and Red Sand, the Libyan camps in Make Slaves, the Mediterranean in Lost Between Two Lands, the hidden life in Europe in Forever Hide.

Musically it is AydrA at their most focused — technical, aggressive, but controlled, every passage serving the tension and the story rather than showing off. As the band said about the record, it is not a simplified album, it is a more deliberate one. Deserter is the door: once it opens, there is no going back.
